The story of Ishi still hovers about the Northern California landscape like a phantom. Richard Burrill has been immersed in the story for some 50 years, and has published Seven books on Ishi, covering Ishi’s first approximate 55 years in the foothills and Mountains of the Mt. Lassen Country to the last four-plus years in San Francisco and the Bay Area. In Richard’s presentation for the Chico History Museum, we will hear from his new book, UNVANQUISHED: ISHI’S STORY OF SURVIVAL, RESILIENCE AND FORGIVENESS, about the significant events and challenges That befell Ishi during his first four months in the progressive and tumultuous city of San Francisco in 1911. According to the author, “the story gets beyond the barriers of culture. It gives us hope. People need hope and the feeling that people still care for one another. The story gives a positive message. It teaches that differences do not have to be dividing.” The book will be available for purchase.
